Being the only not-for-profit, non-denominational preschool in Northbrook, NCNS relies heavily on generous donations from families and friends of the school. The revenue generated through the fees for the excellent programs offered at Northbrook Community Nursery School typically covers only about 85% of our expenses. The remaining necessary funds to support the school are raised through fundraising events and donations.

In addition to support of NCNS through participation in fundraising events or by direct donations to the school, NCNS has two specific funds to which monies can be earmarked.

Glenn Dobbs Teacher Education Fund

The Glenn Dobbs Fund was established by NCNS families in honor of former director Glenn Dobbs to provide funds for the NCNS staff to further their education and training in Early Childhood Development and Education. Glenn Dobbs, an NCNS director from 1986-1995) had a true commitment to continuing education and the fund was established in her name to honor that commitment.

NCNS teachers may apply for funds to use toward classes or seminars to enhance their teaching experience and qualifications and to further their knowledge by taking courses or attending seminars that focus on Early Childhood Development or Education.

The Somerman Fund

In 2007, NCNS received a generous grant from a family foundation. The funds were used to establish The Somerman Fund. Micki Somerman, an NCNS director from 1996 to 2008, reserved a special place in her heart for children with special needs creating an atmosphere of acceptance and care for children of all different abilities. This fund provides financial assistance to families requiring an aide for special needs children attending NCNS. NCNS is committed to including children of different backgrounds and abilities in its program and recognizes the financial burden this care creates for families. The assistance provided by The Somerman Fund helps families chose a pre-school experience that suits their child’s needs. is a website that funds a consumer’s chosen school (NCNS) by channeling their everyday online purchases to well-known merchants and service providers, who contribute a percentage of every purchase back to the school.
